L’ acte de gentillesse…the act of kindness…charity…giving back to society…thanksgiving…. We all come across these phrases quite frequently. And I am sure, our young minds would be getting perplexed when these phrases are thrown at them; there would be several questions which they would be engulfed with. Best International school in Mumbai finds out answers to such questions. Thanksgiving is an age-old ritual that started long back to express gratitude for yielding good harvest and for thanking the bygone year. In many parts of the world, special thanksgiving prayers are organized and the excess grain is distributed to the needy ones. The thanksgiving celebration takes place during the months of October, November, generally after the harvest. The whole idea behind this is whatever is excess, give it back to the society.
Similar festivities are celebrated during more or less the same season, in January in India as well. Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Makar Sankrant in Maharashtra, Lohri in Punjab. All these seasonal festivities mark the onset of happiness and celebration owing to the rich and healthy harvest. India being the agricultural land, gratitude is expressed to the farm animals, Lord Surya, Lord Indra, and birds. Lots of donations, offerings are made to ensure that the balance in the society is maintained; the needy will be taken care of by the privileged ones. The act of kindness, charity begins here. The thought that I have enough, let me take care of those who need it. This thought, this awareness has to be inculcated at a very young and tender age so that it remains forever with them and the balance in the society is maintained always. With a view to instil this thought in the young minds, the Thanksgiving Week is organised every year before the Christmas break at C.P.Goenka International School, one of the best A level schools in Mumbai.
